The Mississippi Department of Archives and History (MDAH),
Division of Historic Properties, seeks applications for the position of
archaeologist at Winterville Mounds, a National Historic Landmark
archaeological site near Greenville, Mississippi. Winterville
functioned as a ceremonial mound center from around A.D. 1000 until
1500. The site archaeologist conducts research on the archaeology of
the site and surrounding region, presents educational programs to
school and adult groups, and assists the site staff with public
programs and events aimed at increasing public awareness of prehistoric
archaeology. The archaeologist assists the site director with the
preservation of the mounds and archaeological features of Winterville,
including assisting archaeologists and scholars from other disciplines
permitted by the Department to investigate the site. Additional
responsibilities include assisting the public with archaeological
inquiries, maintenance of the site's artifact collection, assisting
with exhibit planning and fabrication, and work in the museum. For the
past three years, the University of Southern Mississippi has conducted
excavations at the site.
Education and experience must meet one of the following criteria:
A Master's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Archaeology,
Anthropology, History, or a directly related field
A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or
university in Archaeology, Anthropology, History, or a related field
and one year of experience in work directly related to the
above-described duties.
